About Julia
From China to Bergschenhoek.
I come from China. I’ve lived in the Netherlands for about ten years. And I love inviting people to taste what I bring with me.
For me it always starts with tea. Yunnan tea, from trees over a hundred years old. I pour it for every guest, before we head into the kitchen together. It’s my way of saying: welcome, we have time, we’ll cook in a moment but first let’s just enjoy this.
I work from Bergschenhoek, between Rotterdam and The Hague. My cooking studio is a living room with a kitchen inside, or the other way around, I’ve stopped trying to tell them apart. You can cook here for four to twenty-two people. For birthdays, for team outings, or simply because you love cooking.
The classes are mostly Asian — Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Vietnamese, Taiwanese, Sushi — with Indian, Surinamese and Portuguese mixed in. Three courses, three hours, sitting down at the table between each course to actually eat what you just cooked. That matters to me. Not powering through until everything’s ready, but pausing and enjoying every dish.
For larger groups I work together with a few Asian cooking friends who assist me. That way everyone gets personal attention, even if you come with twenty.
Two kitchens under one roof.
I work from two fully-equipped kitchens, each with its own restaurant area. Kitchen 1 with its own restaurant for 16 guests, kitchen 2 for 6. The two restaurants can be joined for larger groups up to 22 guests in one evening.
For larger groups we split up, each kitchen has its own chef or assisting cooking friend. That way everyone still gets personal attention.
For me, cooking is mostly a language. When I cook for you, or teach you to cook, I’m telling you where I come from. — Julia
Come see for yourself.
The fastest way to experience what I mean is just to book. I take care of the tea, the menu, and the atmosphere. You only need to show up.
